What practically assures hypocrisy is the thought that it’s everyone else, their behavior, their privilege, their wealth, that’s the problem, not one’s own.
Personally traveling abroad has reified my more right-wing views on just about everything I believed prior because it taught me that the alternative to them is a future where each and every unique city on planet earth to be razed in place of labyrinths of sterile gray five-on-ones built on the cheap where the only coffee you can buy is Starbucks and every person is a deracialized, homogenized consumer unit that exists to gormlessly shuffle around in sweatpants and graphic t-shirts with Disney characters on them while staring at their phone. Whenever I think of the most grim timeline imaginable it always ends not with nuclear explosions but branded graphic t-shirts with Disney iconography worn by everyone, everywhere, all the time, with no end.
Traveling abroad has made me realize how much better America does it and how much worse it does it all at once. Traveling also makes me realize how different culture and, therefore, peoples, truly are. If the rest of the world gets to be different, so does America. It doesn't have to be liked nor even make sense to anyone else.
